Empowering Nigerien Scientists: Mentoring Program for Ph.D. Students and Postdocs

In 2023, I launched a 9-month mentoring program with a deeply personal mission: to empower the next generation of Nigerien Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers. Growing up in the Sahel, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and mentorship, and I wanted to create a pathway for young scientists to navigate the complexities of academia with confidence. The program goes beyond academic skills—it’s about guiding them to discover their unique voice, research niche, and a career path that reflects both their aspirations and the needs of their communities. A key feature of the program is the exceptional access it provides to global thought leaders, including Nobel Laureates and prominent scientists. These interactions offer participants not only valuable mentorship but also the inspiration to dream bigger and the opportunity to expand their professional networks far beyond Niger’s borders. The impact has been remarkable: in 2023, over 100 eager applicants applied, and we selected 15 extraordinary individuals for the first cohort. The success and overwhelming response led to the creation of a second cohort in 2024, with 10 more talented students and postdocs. Through this program, my goal is to foster a community of resilient, innovative scientists who are equipped to address critical challenges—both in Niger and on the global stage.
